Talk to family and friends

The diagnosis of a heart valve defect can be shocking. You might experience confusion or feel overwhelmed. But you do not have to go through this alone; involve your family and friends in the process where possible. Support from those around you is an important component of learning to deal with your diagnosis.

As soon as you have been diagnosed with heart failure you will probably want to share this with your family and friends. The more you tell them about what is happening and what they can expect, the better they will be able to support you in the process.

Your family and friends can assist with investigating the precise consequences of your condition. Perhaps you can jointly draw up a list of questions for the doctor. It is always a good idea to take a family member or friend with you to the doctor so someone is present as a sounding board, and who may also be able to ask questions.
